You can configure your web browser to open PDF files in the browser window or in a separate Adobe Acrobat window. To configure the browser, you must have Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader installed. Adobe Acrobat 5.0, 6.0, and 7.0, Acrobat Reader 5.x. and Acrobat Reader 6.0 include Active X plug-in files that allow you to use Internet Explorer (IE) or America Online (AOL) to view PDF files in Windows.
NOTE: In this section, "Acrobat product" refers to Acrobat, Adobe Reader, and Acrobat Reader.
When you install an Acrobat product on a system that includes a browser, the browser is automatically configured to open PDF files within the browser window. Acrobat installs Active X plug-in files that allow you to use IE or AOL to open PDF files. If Acrobat is installed, but PDF files do not open in the browser window, perform the following steps to configure the browser:
Make sure the system meets the requirements for the Acrobat product you are using. For a list of system requirements, refer to the following resources on Adobe's website or ReadMe files:
Application |
Location |
Acrobat 7.0 Professional |
|
Acrobat 7.0 Standard |
|
Acrobat Reader 6.0 |
|
Acrobat 5.x or Acrobat Reader 5.x |
See the ReadMe file included with the application |
Make sure that the Active X plug-in is in the correct location:
Application |
Location |
Acrobat 7.0 |
Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 7.0/Acrobat/ActiveX folder |
Acrobat 6.0 Standard |
Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/Acrobat/ActiveX folder |
Acrobat Reader 6.0 |
Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/Reader/ActiveX folder |
Acrobat 5.x |
Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 5.0/Reader/ActiveX folder |
Use a supported version of the browser:
Acrobat 7.0 and Acrobat Reader 7.0 support IE 5.1-6.1 and AOL 6.0-8.0
Acrobat 5.0 and Acrobat Reader 5.0 support IE 4.0-5.0 and AOL 6.x (Windwos 2000, ME, 98, or 95) or AOL 5.x (Windows NT).
Restart Windows to make sure that IE or AOL is accessing the most current registry Windows registry information.
Reinstall Acrobat or Acrobat Reader to make sure that the correct plug-in information is aided to the Windows registry.
If you have an older version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on the system, uninstall it. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to uninstall this application.
If you want the browser to open PDF files in a separate Acrobat window, configure the browser to use Acrobat or Acrobat Reader as a "helper" application. When you select a PDF file in IE or AOL, the browser opens the PDF file in an Acrobat window instead of the browser window.
To configure the browser for Acrobat 6.0 or 7.0, or Acrobat Reader 6.0 or 7.0:
Exit IE or AOL.
Start Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
Select Edit > Preferences.
Select Internet from the list in the left window pane.
De-select Display PDF in Browser; then click OK.
Restart IE or AOL.
To configure the browser for Acrobat 5.x or Acrobat Reader 5.x:
Exit IE or AOL.
Start Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
Select Edit > Preferences > General.
Select Options from the list in the left window pane.
De-select Display PDF in Browser; then click OK.
Restart IE or AOL.
NOTE: The next time you select a link to a PDF file, the browser may prompt you to open or save the file. If you choose to open the file, the browser opens the file in the "helper" application that you specified. If you choose to save the file, the browser downloads the file to your hard drive.
For more information about general preferences in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, refer to the help files in the specified Acrobat application.
